Cora M. Brown (1914-72) was the first black woman in the United States to be elected to a state senate. Since the only previous woman senator in Michigan had been appointed, she was the first woman of any race elected to the Michigan Senate. After supporting Eisenhower in the 1956 election, she was appointed special associate general counsel of the U.S. Post Office Department on August 15, 1957, becoming the first black woman member of the department’s legal staff.
