Student Gideon Smith was one of the first two African Americans in the country to play college football and one of the first to play professional football. After serving in World War I, Smith joined the faculty of the Hampton Institute in Virginia as a football coach and professor. He was named to the Michigan State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992.
