The MSU Black Faculty, Staff, and Administrators Association (BFSAA) invites you to attend our 8th Annual Outstanding Leaders Award Ceremony on April 9, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Join us in the Atrium of the Molecular Plant Sciences Building, 1066 Bogue St, East Lansing, MI.
Previously known as the Historical and Emerging Leaders Recognition Reception, the BFSAA Outstanding Leaders Award ceremony will acknowledge the accomplishments of persons across six categories:
- Historical Leader
- Contemporary Leader
- Community Leader
- Pioneer Leader
- Inspirational Leader
- Emerging Leader (Undergraduate and Graduate/Professional)
This year’s theme, “POV: Standing Strong for Justice and Equity,” allows attendees to experience first-hand accounts of impactful leaders who have navigated, overcome, and survived adversity. Additionally, attendees will gain a better view of what it means to unapologetic support the Black community in and through your work. All are welcome to attend!
Emerging Leaders Nomination

There is still have time to nominate students for the Emerging Leader Award. You may nominate undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who maintain academic excellence, serve as leaders and change agents within their registered student organization (RSO), department/college, University, and the local community. The nomination deadline is March 15, 2024. Note: students will be notified of your nomination and must submit requested materials (Resume/CV and Leadership Personal Statement) by March 22, 2024.
Nomination Requirements:
- The nominee must be enrolled at MSU and identify as an undergraduate, graduate or professional student.
- The nominee must be an advocate for Black/African Americans.
- The nominator must submit a nomination letter that meets the following requirements:
- Maximum of 1,000 words, 12-point font, Times New Roman, Double Space
- Highlights the leadership* experiences of the student
- How the nominee demonstrates leadership and the magnitude of their accomplishments in a unit, campus, or community-wide
- How the nominee serves as a catalyst for leadership and change within their organization(s), department, college, university, and the local community
- You can also focus on the following:
- The nominee’s significant motivation, creativity, innovation and perseverance in their areas of influence
- Evidence which suggests their efforts are positively influencing the academic advancement of Black/African American students and others (college readiness, bridge programs, recruitment, matriculation, enrollment, retention, graduation, academic success)
- How the nominee achieves academic standards of success within their area(s) of study
- Your relationship with the nominee
- Acknowledge additional awards, scholarships, recognition, education abroad experiences, etc.
*Leadership includes but is not limited to, scholarly endeavors, co-curricular service, community service, religious or philanthropic activities, RSO leadership, advocacy and activism, and employment positions.
